Chocolate Moments

We do not remember days. We remember moments. ~Cesare Pavare

I spent this past weekend at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, immersed in a writer’s workshop led by someone I’ve admired from afar for a quarter of a century. Natalie Goldberg is celebrating the 25-year anniversary of her first book, Writing Down the Bones. And I am celebrating an item on my bucket list.

There’s something about spending a weekend in the company of a rollicking room full of writers who believe the sensory experience in looking at puddles is as delicious as wrapping your tongue around the rich raisiny/pruney notes in a piece of Aphrodisia chocolate.

I explored big weather, took a walk in the rain, curled up in an enormous chair with a view of the misty Berkshire Mountains and wrote, and wrote, and wrote. I learned how to cry a little, read a little, breathe a little, stopping only for marvelous meals and, of course, chocolate.

I came prepared. Unlike most airport enthusiasts who get a charge out of people watching, iPhone chats, or the iPad touch, I set out in search of new and interesting chocolates. I’m never disappointed. On this trip I discovered Little Diggers. For only $4.95 I had my very own 3 oz jar of chocolate delight. It even came with a miniature tongue depressor. You know, the kind you get with Dixie Ice Cream Cups. Brilliant.

But the highlight of my weekend was the story Natalie shared about meeting with her very first publisher. “I don’t remember what I had for lunch,” she shared. “But I do remember what I had for dessert: a big round ball of ice cream rolled in toasted coconut, topped with chocolate sauce.”

I dipped into my little jar of chocolate wonder and smiled.

What’s on YOUR bucket list?

What a great story! I’ve been a fan of Natalie for many years. And that’s what I remember about her too, the stories of sitting in coffee shops with some sweet and writing something out. Thank you for sharing that.

As for my bucket list…years ago I said that if I could just swim with dolphins, I could leave happy. And it’s true, that was such an amazing experience I do feel complete. But then I had kids and I realized I didn’t know what I didn’t know about the unexpected delights of life.

So I know there are some things out there I don’t even know that can bring pleasure.

Speaking of pleasure…I love this site. I think the whole “middle way” thing is valid. I just can’t see giving up chocolate for life. Thanks for bringing us fun ways to enjoy this delight as part of a healthy life style. (And I think Natalie might agree!)

Thank you so much for sharing a piece of YOUR story. I think it’s all about living a “chocolate life” and that must include the things we savor, like chocolate.

Hello Sue Ann. We met at Kripalu when you sat down next to me during the Snatam Kaur concert at Kripalu. I was the one chanting and dancing, lost in the sounds of love coming from our little group. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I am so glad you gave me your card. I loved reading your blog. I hope you will return to Kriplau again to enjoy the energy and peace.
    Namaste,
    Karen

I took a writer’s weekend with Natalie Goldberg probably 20 years ago now, but it’s always stayed with me. I still have the notes! What a bonding experience. Also freeing. Writing Down the Bones really held my hand when I was stepping my footsies into creative writing. I kid you not, I cried when I finsihed that book, because I went through it very slowly and purposefully. I love her paintings too. Glad to hear she is still out there doing workshops. And as always, Sue Ann – lovely to read your top quality blog!

I savor that book, Keddy Ann. Whenever I have writer’s block, I dig back in and get the “nourishment’ I need to pick up that pen and just write. Thanks for stopping by and reading my posts!

What a fabulous time you had, I have always wanted to go to Kripalu, this year is it, being a yoga teacher, there are so many choices, being a food blogger even more. You are so inspirational, I thank you for that.
